I got a weird e-mail
from jumpstartworkouts.com with an attachment?
What do I do?
Don't open the attachment, because it probably
contains a virus, and delete the e-mail. Computer
viruses have proliferated through e-mail in
recent months. Spread each time a unwitting
recipient opens the attachment, the virus causes
the infected computer to spew out hundreds or
thousands of e-mails with forged return
addresses. The return addresses are copied from
the infected computer. Unfortunately, because a
number of people with infected computers had
stored my e-mail address on their computer, some
of these e-mails look like they're from me, even
though they're not. How do I know a real
Jump Start Workouts e-mail when I see one?
The only time I send e-mail is for
specific reasons that would make sense to you
(like, if you've e-mailed me first), and with a
subject line that references the subject of your
e-mail, so if you're not expecting an e-mail from
me, it's probably not from me, regardless of the
return address. You can read about my respect for
privacy here.
I was expecting an
e-mail from you and it never came.
Sometimes an over-active spam filter
will misplace legitimate e-mails from me into
your junk mail folder. Check your junk mail
folder now and thenyou might find other
missing legitimate e-mails from other people in
there, too! If you want to avoid losing e-mails
from me, add me to your address list. If this is
too much of a hassle, consider phoning me
instead.
How can I keep my
computer from getting involved in spam?
Don't open any e-mail attachment unless you know
for sure what it is. Keep your computer free of
viruses by: installing reliable antivirus
software (like McAfee Internet
Security), running the
software on a regular basis to scan your computer
for viruses, running the update feature regularly
to update your software so it can scan for
emergent viruses, and maintaining a subscription
with the antivirus software manufacturer so you
can continue to update your software. You really
have to do all of that to keep your computer free
of viruses. Because some of my customers
apparently haven't, a small number of the
millions of the virus-infected spam e-mails now
flying around the Internet contain my e-mail
address forged in the return address header. To
